Star Wars VII: Lupita Nyong’o considered for role of Sith or descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi

Frankly, I was dubious when Disney first announced that they intended to make a sequel to the sci-fi classic and, let’s be honest, that’s perfectly reasonable following the prequel trilogy. Jar Jar Binks, I’m looking at you on this one (although Oliver recently revealed to me that he had grown fond of him and Gungans in general, which I’m not happy about).

However, now that it has really started to take form, I can’t help but get excited. It was recently revealed that director J.J. Abrams was sizing up a number of potential male leads and now rumours of a potential major female character have also surfaced.

Latino Review was the first to report that Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, of 12 Years a Slave (2013) fame, is in talks with Abrams about playing either a Sith or a descendant of everyone’s favourite Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Either possibility is exciting, and let’s not forget that the stunning actress could be cast as a combination of the two (how cool would a female descendant of Obi-Wan turned evil be?!).

As ever, these are just rumours, and there is no official confirmation as of yet but, should they be accurate then Disney and Abrams could be on for a real winner with this latest instalment in a galaxy far, far away.

Nyong’o delivered a profoundly powerful performance as Patsey in the aforementioned Oscar-winning film and, anything with her name attached, really has a good shot of being something truly great.

If I’m honest, almost all cynicism regarding the outcome of Star Wars VII has disappeared from my mind and I’m just counting down the days until I can go to the cinema, toy lightsaber in hand, to relive my childhood and, hopefully, not have it tarnished again (goddamnit Jar Jar)!

Star Wars VII is due to be released in December 2015.
